Workshop on the use of AR/VR at school

On the 12th of April in Astana school-gymnasium No. 87 named after Abay Kunanbayev a joint workshop on the theme: "Opportunities of VR and AR in education" was held with the NAO named after Y. Altynsarin.
The workshop was held within the week of science with the participation of subject teachers, deputy directors for digitalization, deputy directors for scientific and methodical work.
The National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin National Academy of Education was represented by the staff of the laboratory of digitalization of education, which implemented the scientific project AP14870741 "Impact of collaborative learning in a virtual reality learning environment on educational outcomes of students in schools" implemented within the grant funding for scientific projects in 2022-2024.
During the seminar the participants got acquainted with the learning capabilities of the ClassVR case headset, the innovative learning platform zSpace and the autonomous virtual reality helmet Oculus Quest 2.
Administration of the ClassVR portal and description of the content in Kazakh, practical work on the use of VR, AR content on physics, chemistry, biology, history and culture aroused the greatest interest of the workshop participants.

Results of Project AP14870741 Presented at an International Conference

On September 21–23 of this year, the 13th International Conference on Advanced Computer Information Technologies was held at Wroclaw University of Economics and Business. The conference was organized with the support of the IEEE Poland Section / System, Man, and Cybernetics Society SMC-28.
The main focus of the conference covered the following areas:
  1. Computational intelligence and mathematical modelling
  2. Information in economics and management
  3. Information security
  4. Specialized information and computer systems
  5. Artificial intelligence and cognitive systems
  6. Information technologies in education
Researchers from 54 countries participated in the conference. Out of 255 submitted applications, 139 papers were accepted. The National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin was represented by two papers: “Development of Virtual and Augmented Reality Applications with Realization Project-based Learning” (Zukhra Kalkabayeva, Manargul Mukasheva, Aizhan Zhanasbayeva) and “Teachers' Perspectives on the Use of Virtual Reality in Collaborative Learning” (Manargul Mukasheva, Zukhra Kalkabayeva, Aizhan Zhanasbayeva). These papers were prepared within the framework of grant project AP14870741 “The Impact of Collaborative Learning in a Virtual Reality Learning Environment on the Educational Outcomes of School Students.”

As a result of the event, the conference proceedings were published and made available in the IEEE Xplore digital library, as well as indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, DBLP, Google Scholar, and other international information resources.

The National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin Held a Seminar on “Immersive Learning: VR & AR”


Within the framework of the scientific project AP14870741 “The Impact of Collaborative Learning in a Virtual Reality Learning Environment on the Educational Outcomes of School Students” (2022–2024), the National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin held a training seminar titled “Immersive Learning: VR & AR.” The seminar was aimed at enhancing teachers’ digital competencies and promoting the integration of innovative technologies into the educational process.

Modern educational technologies are becoming a key element of the learning process, with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) taking one of the leading roles in this field. The seminar served as a platform for discussing current issues related to the use of immersive technologies in educational activities and their impact on students’ learning outcomes.

One of the central presentations of the event was titled “New Trends in Immersive Learning in Education,” delivered by the project leader, Professor Manargul U. Mukasheva of the National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin. In her presentation, Professor Mukasheva discussed modern approaches to the use of VR and AR technologies in educational institutions, as well as their potential to improve the quality of learning and enhance students’ perception of information.

The presentation by Saule M. Sarsimbayeva, Associate Professor at K. Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University, and Venera K. Utegenova, computer science teacher at Secondary School No. 53 in Aktobe, was devoted to the topic “Using Virtual and Augmented Reality Applications for Collaborative Learning in Secondary School.” They emphasized the importance of applying interactive and collaborative teaching methods through immersive technologies, which contribute to active student interaction and the improvement of educational outcomes.

Nataliia V. Soroko, PhD, representing the Institute for Digitalisation of Education of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, delivered a presentation titled “Creating Educational Resources Using AR Platforms.” The presentation included practical recommendations on developing educational materials based on AR technologies, integrating them into school curricula, and using them to personalize the learning process.

Another important area of the seminar was the discussion of the impact of immersive technologies on students’ health. Kuandyk M. Taibolatov, Acting Director of the Center for Career Guidance and Human Capital Development of the National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin, together with Aissara A. Omirzakova, doctoral student at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, presented the results of a study titled “The Impact of Virtual Reality on the Health of School Students.” The presentation emphasized that the integration of VR into the educational process requires a careful approach in terms of following recommendations aimed at preserving students’ physical and mental health.

The practical part of the seminar included master classes, during which teachers became familiar with the use of VR and AR technologies in educational practice. Among the platforms and solutions demonstrated were:
Meta Quest — an innovative platform that enables the creation of interactive educational environments in virtual reality.
ClassVR — a solution designed specifically for educational institutions, providing teachers and students with the opportunity to use VR in everyday learning.
The seminar concluded with a discussion of the prospects for using VR and AR technologies in education, as well as possible ways to effectively implement them in schools and other educational institutions.

Distance Learning in Immersive Virtual Reality


On May 19–21, 2026, a preliminary experiment was conducted on the use of an immersive VR environment for distance learning with the participation of 8th-grade students aged 13–14. The experimental group studied in a symmetric VR environment and included 25 students, while the control group studied via Zoom and included 26 students.
The experiment involved teachers of Kazakh language and literature (2 teachers), school administration representatives, including the principal, the deputy principal for digitalization and science, and the deputy principal for academic affairs, as well as expert teachers.
After the lessons conducted via the Zoom platform and in the immersive VR environment, the students completed pre-prepared questionnaires and learning tasks.

Results of Applying Spatial AI, GenAI, and VR Technologies in Distance Learning Presented at the International Level


From June 12 to 15, 2026, the 11th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning (ICDEL 2026) was held in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
The conference was attended by staff members of the National Academy of Education named after Y. Altynsarin as part of the implementation of scientific project AP26198921 “Methodology for Designing and Implementing Distance Learning Using 3D Spatial Artificial Intelligence and VR,” funded by the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan under grant funding for 2025–2027.
During the conference, two scientific presentations were delivered: “Using Immersive Virtual Reality for Collaborative Distance Learning” and “Teachers' Readiness to Use Virtual and Augmented Reality in Education,” which presented the interim results of the scientific project.
Following expert evaluation, the presentation “Using Immersive Virtual Reality for Collaborative Distance Learning” received the “Best Presentation Award.”
As a result of the conference, the scientific papers will be published in the ICDEL 2026 conference proceedings, published by IEEE. The proceedings will be made available in the IEEE Xplore database and indexed in the international scientometric databases Scopus and Ei Compendex.
